Abstract
An improved method of processing a nonferrous metal and alloys of said metal using a blanketing gas having a global warming potential is provided. The improvement involves reducing the global warming potential of the blanketing gas by blanketing the nonferrous metal and alloys with a gaseous mixture including at least one compound selected from the group consisting of COF.sub.2, CF.sub.3 COF, (CF.sub.3).sub.2 CO, F.sub.3 COF, F.sub.2 C(OF).sub.2, SO.sub.2 F.sub.2, NF.sub.3, SO.sub.2 ClF, SOF.sub.2, SOF.sub.4, NOF, F.sub.2 and SF.sub.4.
