Disclosed and claimed are compositions, devices, methods and kits that are useful in occluding lumens or bulking-up regions of tissues or organs in a living mammal. The invention pertains to compositions, containing specific bioactive components in combination with carriers, and tissue based implants, wherein the bioactive components promote responsive body processes that contribute to the formation of the occlusion or bulked-up region or repair of damaged tissue. Also disclosed is an expandable collagen sponge for implantation into lumens, voids, and cavities.
