A process for tracking the history of reconciliation negotiations between parties for approval of a field document in a complex workflow system is provided. The process involves recording an action of at least one of the parties taken with respect to the field document during the reconciliation negotiations into a data array, translating the action into a state within the workflow process, and recording the state within the workflow process into the data array. The process further involves translating the state into a status of the data array and recording the status of the data array in a memory connected to the workflow processing system, wherein the data array provides a record of the actions and states throughout the reconciliation negotiations.
