Abstract
In the present invention, a tunnel is set up between two mobility serving nodes, source and target nodes. The tunnel is used for communication between a mobile node and the source node after the mobile node completes an L2 handoff from the source node to the target node but before completing the standard Mobile IP L3 registration process or undergoing IP routing update with the target node. The tunnel may be set up either before or after the mobile node completes the L2 handoff from the source node to the target node. Also, the tunnel may be set up by a trigger that is generated either externally or internally of the mobile node.
