The invention relates to the use of compatible solutes selected from the group comprised of di-myo-inositol phosphate (DIP), cyclic 2,3 diphosphoglycerate (cDPG), 1,1-di-glyccrol phosphate (DGP), .beta.-mannosylglycerate (firoin) .beta.-mannosylglyceramide (firoin-A) and/or di-mannosyl-di-inositol phosphate (DMIP) and/or of derivatives of these compounds or combinations thereof for protecting organisms, organs, tissues, cells or the organic building blocks thereof from chemical radicals and oxidatively active compounds.
