Described is a closure element including a sealing element or polymer liner compound having improved barrier properties. The sealing element or compound includes (a) a thermoplastic polymer; and (b) an effective absorbing amount of a cyclodextrin material. The cyclodextrin material is selected from the group comprising .alpha.-cyclodextrin, .beta.-cyclodextrin, .gamma.-cyclodextrin, derivatives of .alpha.-cyclodextrin, .beta.-cyclodextrin and .gamma.-cyclodextrin and mixtures thereof.
