A substance for use in the treatment of cancer, includes a compound selected from metallocenyl .beta.-diketones Mc-CO--CZ.sub.1Z.sub.2-CO--R. Mc is Fc (ferrocenyl), Rc (ruthenocenyl) or Oc (osmocenyl), R is 11, alkyl or aryl and Z.sub.1 and Z.sub.2 are H, alkyl, aryl or substituted alkyl, ferrocenyl, the enol forms of the .beta.-diketones and metal complexes of the .beta.-diketones of the general formula M(.beta.-diketonato)A.sup.1, M(.beta.-diketonato)A.sup.1A.sup.2, M(.beta.-diketonato)A.sup.1B.sup.1B.sup.2, M(.beta.-diketonato)B.sup.1B.s-up.2 and M(.beta.-diketonato)B.sup.1B.sup.2B.sup.3B.sup.4. M is Rh or Ir, A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are cyclic dienes having 6-8 carbons, or linear alkenes having 2-7 carbons. B.sup.1, B.sup.2, B.sup.3 and B.sup.4 are selected from CO, P(R.sup.1R.sup.2R.sup.3), P(OR.sup.1)(OR.sup.2)(OR.sup.-3), R.sup.4 and X in which R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are independently alkyl, phenyl or ferrocenyl, and X is a halide or a pseudohalide.
