The present invention relates to carboxylic esters based on 2-hydroxymethylnorbornane and on aliphatic dicarboxylic acids of the formula 1 where A is --(CH.sub.2).sub.x-- and where x=from 1 to 10, and to a process for their preparation, and also to their use as lubricants or plasticizers for thermoplastics.
