The present invention discloses a controlled release formulation suitable for oral administration comprising N.sup.6-cyclopentyl-5'-(N-ethyl)carbox-amidoadenosine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or ester thereof incorporated in a controlled release matrix. The controlled release formulation of the invention is especially suitable for treating heart rhythm disturbances in a mammal.
