Abstract

A non-coated gravure printing paper offering good gravure printability--particularly as evidenced in the reduced generation of speckling, was obtained by improving the cushioning property of the paper and thus improving its adhesion with the photogravure cylinder--by means of adding a substance or substances, such as surface-active agents, which will inhibit the binding between pulp fibers in the paper and which, when added to an ideal level of 0.3 weight % of the bone-dry weight of pulp, will reduce the tensile strength of paper in the machine direction by 5 to 40% as measured in accordance with JIS P 8113, compared with the level when no such substance is added.
