Abstract

The present invention describes a method of administering an A.beta.-binding agent or drug which has affinity for amyloid beta (A.beta.) in the periphery (blood) and reducing A.beta. levels in the brain without the need for the agent or drug to enter the brain itself. The A.beta.-binding agents utilized in the methods of the invention are preferably non-immunomodulating agents (e.g., antigenic peptides or antibodies) and bind to A.beta. in the periphery, or blood. Such compounds do not significantly cross the blood/brain barrier, and yet they lower amyloid (A.beta.) levels in the brain, thereby serving as safer, therapeutic and prophylactic treatments against diseases associated with A.beta. in the brain, e.g., Alzheimer's Disease and amyloid angiopathy, as well as against other AD-related amyloidoses.
