A process for dehydrating 2-methylpentanediol-2,4 to a mixture of 2-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene at elevated temperature in the presence of an acid catalyst using a polyglycol ether as a heat carrier, wherein a polyglycol ether containing from 80 to 100% by weight of a polyethylene glycol dimethyl ether of the formula CH.sub.3(OCH.sub.2CH.sub.2).sub.nOCH.sub.3 where n=2-8 and from 0 to 20% by weight of a polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether of the formula CH.sub.3(OCH.sub.2CH.sub.2).sub.nOH where n=2-8 based in each case on the total mass of polyglycol ether, is used.
