The instrument set and the method for preparing a cervical vertebral body (2) to receive an abutment surface (13) of an intervertebral joint prosthesis (11) in the intervertebral space (1) are characterized in that a guide element (3), which is to be inserted into the intervertebral space (1), and a working instrument (10), for working at least one vertebral body (2), have interacting guide surfaces (5, 9a). The working range of the working instrument is limited by the guide surfaces (5, 9a).
