Neurotherapeutically effective pharmaceutical compositions are described that include carboxypeptidase E inhibitors. One class of carboxypeptidase E inhibitors found to exhibit significant neurotropic activity are .beta.-lactam compounds, particularly penam and cephem .beta.-lactam antibiotics and non-antibiotic derivatives thereof.
