Abstract
The invention relates to substituted 9-alkyladenines of Formula I: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R.sub.1-R.sub.6 are defined as set forth in the specification. The invention is also directed to the use of such compounds to inhibit adenosine A.sub.1 receptor activation in a mammal. The compounds of the present invention are useful as diuretics, renal protectives against acute or chronic renal failure, as well as agents to improve the therapeutic outcome resulting from defibrillation or cardiopulmonary resuscitation by preventing post-resuscitation bradycardia, bradyarrythmia and cardioplegia, to restore cardiac function following a cardioplegic procedure, and to treat or prevent intermittent claudication.
