A method of measuring the amount of gastric secretion in a mammal involves administering a substance or formulation containing an excess quantity of a water-insoluble carbonate to the mammal to react with acid in the stomach, in which the insoluble carbonate is enriched with at least one isotope selected from .sup.13C, .sup.14C, .sup.17O and .sup.18O in a known amount. The content of the or each selected isotope in the exhaled carbon dioxide is allowed to stabilise before obtaining a sample of exhaled air containing carbon dioxide, and determining the content of the selected or each selected isotope in the exhaled carbon dioxide.
