A control system for an exhaust valve and a method of actively controlling an exhaust valve includes monitoring at least a first engine characteristic, a second engine characteristic, and at least one additional noise determining characteristic. An exhaust valve position is then adjusted based on the first engine characteristic, the second engine characteristic, and the at least one additional noise determining characteristic to improve fuel economy without adversely affecting noise levels.
