Abstract
A system for tracking an instrument relative to an anatomical structure is provided. The system can include at least one tracking device, which can be coupled to the instrument. The system can also include a shape sensor coupled to the instrument that can determine a shape of the instrument. The system can include a tracking system that can track a position of the at least one tracking device relative to the anatomical structure. The system can further include a navigation system that can determine a position and shape of the instrument relative to the anatomical structure based on the position of the at least one tracking device determined by the tracking system and the shape of the instrument as sensed by the shape sensor.
