Abstract
Methods and systems for expanding mineral ore, including perlite, are disclosed. Microwave energy is generated and applied to at least one gas. The energized gas then contacts particles of at least one mineral ore, wherein the transfer of energy softens the particles and boils the water contained therein, thereby at least partially expanding the particles.
