An apparatus and method for processing waste material including organic waste and MSW comprises an elongate processing chamber (100) having a processing zone (200, 300) for processing waste at an elevated temperature; wherein the processing chamber (100) has: an inlet (210) for introducing said waste material; an outlet (504) for removal of processed solids; first means (206, 306) for introducing hot gasses into said chamber (100) at a radially outer region of said chamber; and extraction means (102) for extracting gas from a central region of said chamber (100).
