In a method of at least one of monitoring and controlling termite populations in an area accessible to the termites, a heat treated wood extract, extracted from wood that has been heat-treated to a temperature of greater than about 150 degrees C., is located in an area accessible to termites. In various embodiments the extract may be in a liquid form or a solid/particular form and may be deposited on or in a carrier. The extract may be deposited in a station housing, or deposited directly in the area accessible to termites. In still other embodiments, particulate heat treated wood, having been heat treated to a temperature of greater than about 150 degrees C., is placed in an area accessible to termites.
