A monitoring device (820) for monitoring the vital signs of a user is disclosed herein. The monitoring device (820) is preferably comprises an article (825), an optical sensor (830), an accelerometer (710) and processor (741). The optical sensor (830) preferably comprises a photodetector (836) and a plurality of light emitting diodes (835). A sensor signal from the optical sensor (830) is processed with a filtered accelerometer output signal from the accelerometer to create a filtered vital sign signal used to generate a real-time vital sign for a user.
