Abstract

Numerous embodiments of methods and apparatus for machining workpieces using one or more optical pulses are disclosed. One embodiment of a method of machining a Workpiece includes directing an optical pulse to impinge upon a surface of the workpiece. The optical pulse can be configured to initiate a vaporization process within a first period of time after impinging upon the workpiece surface. After the first period of time, a characteristic of the optical pulse is changed while maintaining the initiated vaporization process and, after a second period of time, the optical pulse is terminated to terminate the maintained vaporization process. Exemplary articles that may be produced by machining workpieces are also disclosed.
