A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically effective amount of a pharmaceutically active substance and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier including a cationic excipient, wherein said cationic excipient is a labile ester of betaine and a lipophilic alcohol having at least one primary hydroxyl group.
