A method of treating water, applicable to sterilise water for drinking or to treat ballast water, may include flowing water through a conduit containing a reduced pressure zone arranged to reduce the pressure of the flow by at least 102 to a sub-atmospheric pressure. The method may include passing water through a siphon conduit having a headspace provided with a gas removal pump.
