An impact absorbing type steering shaft, which has one end coupled to a steering wheel of a vehicle, for absorbing impact energy by being contracted at the time of collision of the vehicle includes: an inner shaft having an engagement region on one side, the engagement region having a male tooth portion formed on an outer circumferential surface thereof; and an outer shaft having a female tooth portion formed on an inner circumferential surface thereof, the female tooth portion being slidably engaged with the male tooth portion when the engagement region of the inner shaft is inserted into the female tooth portion. The inner shaft has an impact absorbing region formed on the other side from the engagement region so that an outer diameter of the impact absorbing region becomes larger toward the other side of the inner shaft.
