Provided are a positive electrode active material, capable of achieving both high capacity and high output, for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries and a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery using the same. A positive electrode active material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries according to the present invention contains a lithium transition metal oxide which has a layered structure and which contains Ni as a transition metal. The percentage of Ni element with respect to the total molar amount of metal elements, other than lithium, in the lithium transition metal oxide is 89 mole percent or more. A zirconium compound is present on the surface of the lithium transition metal oxide.
