A filter material for isolating liquids from fluid streams comprises a wetlaid or drylaid non-woven or woven, or an open-cell foam. The two sides of the filter material are impregnated with two different binders in such a way that one side of the filter material has a higher surface energy and thus a shorter drop absorption time than the opposing side.
