Abstract
An underground signal transmitter is located near a drill bit on a downhole tool. An above-ground tracker determines the relative orientations of the transmitter and tracker. The tracker also has a compass for determining the tracker's orientation relative to magnetic north. A central processing unit within the tracker uses compass and relative orientation data to calculate the orientation of the transmitter relative to magnetic north. This information can be used to map the bore path and make course corrections.
