Abstract
A gaming machine comprises a display and an electronic controller for playing a game including game symbols displayed in symbol positions. The symbol positions may be arranged in two or more predefined groups or as reels. One or more symbol positions are designated as bonus symbol positions. A bonus value award associated with the bonus symbol is awarded when the bonus symbol appears in a bonus symbol position. In one embodiment, the number of designated bonus symbol positions is dependent on the player bet. In other embodiments, each predefined group or reel has a probability of displaying the bonus symbol and the probability of designating a symbol position as a bonus symbol position in the predefined group or on the reel depends on the probability of displaying the bonus symbol in the predefined group or on the reel.
