Abstract
An automatic detection of categories of motor vehicle by means of the analysis of profile images of vehicles, and the subject matter of the present patent is an innovative product developed to count how many of the axles of a motor vehicle are suspended axles and how many are in contact with the ground, and which are a single or a double wheelset in contact with the ground, thereby determining the category of the vehicle for toll-calculation purposes; the system is used to produce a vehicle-profile image by scanning carried out by an optical beam curtain as the vehicle passes over the carriageway.
