The present invention relates to a compound of following formula (I), which is a novel prodrug of biguanide derivatives: (I). The present invention also relates to the preparation and methods of using the compound. In particular, the invention relates to prodrugs wherein metformin and phenformin are attached to AuIII cyclometalated backbone to form novel AuIII prodrugs of metformin or phenformin with improved anticancer effects.
