A system, device and methods for inhibiting biofilm formation and preventing infection associated with indwelling medical devices by generating and applying surface acoustic waves (SAW) to a surface of the indwelling medical device. One or more piezoelectric ultrasound transducer(s) in direct contact with a surface of the implantable medical device generates high frequency mechanical vibrations in a range from KHz to MHz upon receipt of an electrical signal from a processor. The high frequency mechanical vibrations produce SAW in the nanometer range along a surface of the indwelling medical device and inhibit formation of bacterial biofilms.
