Abstract

Methods and systems integrate direct carbon capture and desalination processes to various degrees, benefiting from synergies in the combined processes. A method includes receiving an input liquid comprising a brine reject stream from a water treatment facility and pre-treating the input liquid. The pre-treatment includes one or more of filtration, a reverse osmosis, and ion exchange. The method also includes performing an electrochemical process on the input liquid to produce at least one hydroxide-rich stream and capturing CO₂ from air using the hydroxide-rich stream and a passive air capture system, thereby producing a liquid carbonate solution containing air-captured CO₂. In some cases byproducts and recovered water can be used by the water treatment facility and/or the carbon capture process.
