Abstract

An R-T-B based permanent magnet includes C and Zr. The R-T-B based permanent magnet includes a main phase grain and a grain boundary. The R-T-B based permanent magnet has Zr concentration distribution of the main phase grain within a specific range, and a S(C)/(S(B)+S(C)) of 98.0% or more, where S(B) denotes a total area of ZrB₂ in the grain boundary and S(C) denotes a total area of ZrC in the grain boundary, in a section of the R-T-B based permanent magnet. The R-T-B based permanent magnet has a Zr content of 0.60 mass % or more and 1.60 mass % or less, a B content of above 0 mass % and 0.85 mass % or less, and a C content of above 0 mass % and 0.260 mass % or less, out of 100 mass % of the R-T-B based permanent magnet.
