Abstract

The following relates generally to improving chimney safety through monitoring and detection of overheat conditions or animal intrusion that may damage a chimney or result in uncontrolled fire spreading outside the chimney. To improve chimney safety, a system may use temperature levels, sound signals, and/or imagery data to determine an overheat condition in a chimney. Upon determination of an overheat condition, the system may send an alert to a mobile device of a user or take other action (e.g., shutting off gas to a firebox, alerting the fire department, etc.). Similarly, sound signals and/or imagery data may be used to determine the presence of: (i) animals within or near the chimney, and/or (ii) water in the chimney box (e.g., water on a wall of the chimney box, or dripping to the bottom of the chimney box).
