A process for preparing novel modified resins comprising heating and reacting an addition product (A) of a cyclopentadiene resin and an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride with an addition product (B) of a higher aliphatic ester having a conjugated double bond and an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride, in an inert gas atmosphere in the presence or absence of a metal compound; and A novel composition for printing inks comprising, as a vehicle component, a modified resin obtained by the reaction of 95 to 40% by weight of an addition product (A) of a cyclopentadiene resin and an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride with 5 to 60% by weight of an addition product (B) of a higher aliphatic ester having a conjugated double bond and an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, in an inert gas atmosphere.
