Abstract
Glass is coated with an alkali-resistant silicon coating by moving the glass past a coating station while the glass is at least at 400.degree. C. Silane-containing gas is released close to the glass surface, which gas includes a proportion of a gaseous electron-donating compound which imparts a predetermined alkali-resistance to the coating produced when silane in the gas pyrolyzes at the glass surface.
