A digital data enciphering and deciphering circuit and method for transforming a plaintext signal into an enciphered signal which is secure during transmission. After receipt, the enciphered signal is transformed back into the original plaintext signal by use of the same circuit and method. A key generator circuit is used to generate a key having certain properties of randomness, including non linear relationships among key bits. The key is combined with the plaintext signal in the data enciphering circuit to produce an enciphered signal and the same key is also combined with the enciphered signal in the data deciphering circuit to produce the plaintext signal.
