A rechargeable electrochemical battery including a lithium anode. A rechargeable electrochemical battery wherein the anode 2 is a lithium base and the electrolyte is composed of a solution of a lithium salt in a non-aqueous solvent. The active material of cathode 1 is a manganese dioxide containing lithium ions and displaying the crystallographic structure of .alpha. manganese dioxide known as cryptomelane.
