Abstract

A non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell comprises a negative electrode composed of at least one selected from the group consisting of lithium and lithium compounds, a non-aqueous electrolyte containing a lithium salt, and a positive electrode active material having a composition represented by the general formula, Li.sub.x M.sub.y Mn.sub.(2-y) O.sub.4, wherein M is at least one selected from the group consisting of Co, Cr, Fe and the like, 0.85.ltoreq.x<1.15, and 0.02.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.3. The positive electrode active material in a charged state has a composition represented by the general formula, Li.sub.x M.sub.y Mn.sub.2 (-y) O.sub.4, wherein x.ltoreq.0.7, owing to the extraction of lithium ions from the positive electrode active material on charging. The non-aqueous electrolyte secondary cell has an improved cycle life.
