A quaternary ammonium trihalide, a novel compound, represented by the formula: [A--R'].sup.+ .multidot.X.sub.3.sup.- (wherein A stands for a trialkyl-amino radical or a pyridyl radical, R' for an alkyl radical of 6 to 22 carbon atoms, and X for a halogen atom) and a method for the dissolution of a metal with a liquid consisting essentially of an organic solvent and the quaternary ammonium trihalide.
