Abstract

Connection admission control (CAC) is a key traffic control function for future asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks. It is required to determine whether or not the network has sufficient resources to accept a new connection. This decision is based on the predicted quality of service after accepting the new connection. A connection admission control method of the present invention is faster and/or more accurate than other methods which have been proposed. It involves precomputing an upper and lower bounds to an admission surface. Calls can be accepted when the operating point is below the lower bound. Calls must be rejected when the operating point is above the upper bound. A more detailled method for deciding whether to accept the connection when the operating point is between the two bounds is also disclosed.
