Abstract

A non-destructive method for tensioning a cable under tension is described whereby the cable is contacted with an impact stimulus with a force transverse to the length of the cable thereby creating an incident vibrational wave in the cable and propagating the wave along the length of the cable. The propagating wave is sensed by a first accelerometer positioned on the cable which detects the passage and amplitude of the wave and creates electrical signals having a magnitude directly proportional to the amplitude of the wave. A second accelerometer which is positioned at a distance apart from the first accelerometer subsequently senses and detects the passage of the wave at the second accelerometer, also creating electrical signals having a magnitude directly proportional to the amplitude of the wave. The electrical signals from the accelerometers are received and processed to ultimately calculate the tension in the cable.
