A method of inhibiting degeneration of neural cells comprising treating the cells with an effective degeneration-inhibiting amount of one or more compounds of Formula I: ##STR1## wherein R is a C.sub.12 to C.sub.22 linear or branched alkyl group, or pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof is disclosed.
