Abstract
The present invention provides drilling fluid additives for water-based drilling muds comprising olefins having the following general structure: C.sub.n H.sub.2?(n-x)+1! wherein n is between about 8-30; x is the number of carbon-carbon double bonds in said olefins; x is between about 1-n/2; and, said olefins comprise between about 0-6 substituents selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkenyl groups having between about 1-5 carbon atoms. The additives may be used as lubricants, rate of penetration enhancers, and/or spotting fluids for water-based drilling muds.
