Abstract

A component diagnostic system for a motor vehicle including sensors not directly associated with the component such that the component does not directly affect the sensors, each sensors being arranged to detect a signal containing information as to whether the component is operating normally or abnormally and outputting a corresponding electrical signal. A processor receives the electrical signals and processes the same to determine if the component is operating abnormally based thereon. Another system within the vehicle is affected if the component is operating abnormally. The processor preferably applies pattern recognition techniques. Also, a method for automatically monitoring a component of a vehicle during operation of the vehicle on a restricted roadway, in which operation of the component is monitored in order to detect abnormal operation of the component, and if abnormal operation of the component is detected, the vehicle is automatically directed off of the restricted roadway.
