Abstract
A lithium rechargeable battery having a superior battery performance in which manganese, being cheap and occurring in abundance, is used as an element of the positive electrode active material. The lithium rechargeable battery includes a negative electrode and a positive electrode, the negative electrode being made of a material capable or absorbing and releasing lithium, and the positive electrode being made of a lithium-containing metal oxide capable of absorbing and releasing lithium. The lithium-containing metal oxide is represented by a compositional formula Li.sub.x MN.sub.1-y-z Ni.sub.y Fe.sub.z O.sub.2, where 1.ltoreq.x.ltoreq.1.3, 0.05.ltoreq.y<0.9, 0.05.ltoreq.z<0.9, 0.1.ltoreq.y+z.ltoreq.0.9.
