Abstract
A liquid ink jet recording apparatus and method which forms a multi-level tonal image by liquid droplets discharged through plural nozzles. A first scan of a recording head past a recording material ejects ink droplets from a first nozzle in accordance with a tone signal. A sub-scan operation is performed and a second scan of the recording head ejects ink droplets from a second nozzle in accordance with a tone signal. The ink droplets ejected from the first and second nozzles have actual size/volumes different than their nominal size/volumes. Plural tonal levels are formed by super-imposing ink droplets of the same color and a same nominal volume but different actual volumes by at least the first and second nozzles thus minimizing variations between pixels having the same tonal level.
