Nonlinear optical materials, methods of crystal growth, and devices employing such materials satisfy the general formula (.SIGMA..sub.i=1-3 M.sub..alpha.i.sup.1)(.SIGMA..sub.j=1-3 M.sub..beta.j.sup.2)(.SIGMA..sub.k=1-6 M.sub..gamma.k.sup.3)B.sub.14 O.sub.25 Formula 1 wherein M.sup.1, M.sup.2, and M.sup.3 are mono-, di, or tri-valent metal ions respectively; wherein (.SIGMA..sub.i=1-3.alpha..sub.i)=X and ranges from 0 to 2, (.SIGMA..sub.j=1-3.beta..sub.j)=Y and ranges from 0 to 4, and (.SIGMA..sub.k=1-6.gamma..sub.k)=Z and ranges from 0 to 2, and wherein X+Y+Z=4.0.
